Town Meeting

Vermont Town Meeting Day is the first Tuesday in March. Citizens come together to discuss and vote on the business of our small mountain town. For over 200 years, Town Meeting Day has been an important political tradition for Vermonters to elect local officials and decide on budgets. It is also a time for neighbors to discuss the civic problems and issues which our community faces together. The ideas we share, help to guide our elected officials' work. Every registered voter has a voice during our annual meeting. When you attend, you will not be an audience, you will be a member of the assembly of voters. Please join us!

If you did not receive one, please let us know and help us update our mailing list. We may have some extra reports at the Town Office; stop by to pick one up if you need one. Please bring your Town Report with you to Town Meeting, so you can refer to it as we conduct our business.

We can provide childcare and help you get a ride to Town Meeting. Contact your town clerk in advance, to make arrangements.

Town Meeting Access for Persons with Disabilities

The entrances to Burnham Hall for Town Meeting are the basement doors on both sides of the building. The entrance on the Southeast side of Burnham Hall is also a drive-up handicapped entrance, accessible via the U-shaped driveway. Voters with limited mobility are encouraged to use this drive-up entrance. For traffic safety, please enter the driveway at the end nearest the building, and exit back onto the road at the end farthest from the building, where there is better visibility for oncoming traffic. An elevator is located off the hallway between the bathrooms downstairs. This elevator will take you to the second floor where town meeting is held. Please contact the Town Clerk or a Board of Civil Authority member if you have questions or need assistance.

Nominations, Petitions for Candidate for Office

Nominations of the Town officers shall be by petition. The petition shall be filled with the town clerk, together with a completed consent of candidate form, no later than 5:00 p.m., on the sixth Monday preceding the day of the election. **(This year the legal deadline wiil be Jan. 29, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.) 17 V.S.A. 2681(a)(1)(A)

The petition shall contain valid signatures of voters of the municipality, of at least 1% of the number of registered voters. 17 V.S.A. 2681(b)

A person consenting to be nominated may withdraw by notifying the Town Clerk in writing no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Wednesday after the filing deadline. 17 V.S.A. 2681(d)
